Prominent Ear

Prominent ear, which is the irregularity of the ear shape, can be fixed with surgery without leaving behind visible wound marks. When looked from the front, the edges of the ears can’t be seen or can be slightly seen. In patients who have prominent ear or similar irregularities, the inner part of the ear and sides can be seen completely. The ear is normally 15-30 degrees from the cranium. The side of the ear and the space between the ear and the skin is approximately 1-2 cm. In prominent ear and irregularity of the ear shape, the angle between the ear and head is extra and the skin found in the ears middle part is also seen to be excess. If the person has a complaint about their ear shape, evaluation by a plastic surgeon can be made to see if the person is suitable for the operation or not. Operations can be performed at or after ages 5-6 because the ear is almost fully developed to its size at that age. Most of the patients in our clinic are children who are attending school. This does not mean that middle and old aged patients do not undergo this type of surgery because they are also complainers. While general anesthesia is preferred in children, tranquillizers along with local anesthesia are preferred in older people. The operation takes approximately 2 hours. The surgery is performed from behind the ear. The angle between the ear and neck is lessened depending on the insufficient folds. The thinning of cartilage and forming a fold by stitching accordingly making explicit ear folds operation. If the depth of the hole found in the middle part of the ear is much, it is also entered from behind the ear and the holes topside cartilage is removed which leads to a compact form. The dressing placed after the operation is opened 2-3 days later and then is re-dressed. The ear is left completely open after 1 week but an elastic band that supports the ear toward the head is suggested to be used. After the operation, the ears outer impacts and pulling of the ear protection is important.
